This weekend I celebrated the Dutch holiday Sinterklaas. It's a holiday in which the good saint Nicolas comes by your house with his helpers and gives you presents. At least when you were a good boy/girl, otherwise he will put you in his sack and takes you back to Spain (where he supposedly came from). Off-course I've been a good boy, and better yet I go to celebrate it twice!
I got a lot of nice presents, but best part of the weekend was seeing my little 2 year-old niece getting a lot of wearable gifts (princess dresses, sparkly shoes, a tiara, a backpack and a little drum which you can hang around your neck) and insisting on wearing them all together at the same time for the remainder of the day!
The above picture shows an old picture of a Sinterklaas visit to a school. I came across this print in my local photography shop and had to get it. I think this picture is taken just after the war. The scene has a bit of a sad sight to it, especially with the bad make-up job on Sinterklaas' helper who normally would be completely black and dressed in a special costume, instead of just some coal-streaks on his face. I think the image really portrays a kind of soberness of the country struggling to start up again after the war.
Interesting image to find an a routine visit to the photoshop, there's treasure everywhere!
Great picture!
ReplyDeleteThe "Zwarte Piet" looks more like a burglar than a real Zwarte Piet.
And I wonder why the girls in the front are wearing hats with questionmarks. What's up with that?
They're boys Tim, :D. All the girls wear bows in their hair and the boys are wearing the weird hats.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree on the Zwarte Piet though. Where did he get those tanningsalonshades?
